AAUW Gresham Area Branch

Public Policy

Our branch of AAUW is an active member of the Gresham Chamber of Commerce.  Two of our members serve on the Chamber Government Affairs Council, and two serve on the Chamber Resource Team.  We've sent speakers to several local service organizations, and all were well received.  Our community activism has resulted in increased visibility for our branch and numerous opportunities to collaborate further.

On October 23, 2008, we co-sponsored a Candidates Forum with the League of Women Voters of Oregon.  The event featured candidates for State Senate, State Representative, County Commissioner, Mayor, and City Council (Gresham, Troutdale, Wood Village, and Fairview).

On February 24, 2009, we collaborated with the Mt. Hood Community College Herstory project to produce a Salary Negotiation Workshop for Women.   It was facilitated but Sam Imperati, J.D., Executive Director of the Institute for Conflict Management, Inc., and Deborah Bond, CPA, one of our branch members. Check out our Association website blog about this event

On April 22, 2008, we presented Just Desserts, a panel discussion to commemorate Equal Pay Day.  State Senator Laurie Monnes Anderson addressed the political aspects, branch member/attorney Jim Aynes presented the historical aspects, and state economist Jessica Nelson addressed the economic aspects.  Our goal was to highlight how unequal pay for women denies them a piece of the economic pie.

Our branch is interested in collaborating with local organizations on projects that will advance our mission of promoting equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, and research.  We would be very open to working with local organizations on any projects that are compatible with our mission.
